Google Chromebooks — is this a way to create focused learning? – Frank Sirianni (ERC)

Historically schools have been motivated to develop a BYOD program, often neglecting the necessary policies and procedures required in the classroom.  This session will share ideas on how to establish an environment to avoid the pitfalls associated with perceived multitasking and online distractions.

Questions will be raised on whether the design of the device and software/hardware infrastructure enhance 21st century learning. Also the question of when and where is there a need for Classroom control software (Apple Classroom or Hapara and other services) will be discussed.

How to Nail a Maths Lesson – Brent Hughes (Matific)

Maths education is not something that everyone enjoys and that is often because you didn't get the experience you deserved when you were in primary school.

Brent will run through the ways in which Matific is working to ensure that children all over the world are given a fighting chance to not only tolerate maths but actually learn to love it.

Teaching maths can bring with it a huge amount of anxiety in itself but with some of the practical tips and tricks that Brent will share you can nail your maths lesson each and every time you step into a primary classroom. Even if you're asked to teach addition and subtraction of fractions with uncommon denominators *Pause for gasps*.

Introducing Primary Children to the Digital World – AustSTEM

The AustSTEM Foundation is developing experiential resources to engage teachers and their students with the digital world across the WHOLE late-primary curriculum.. Its main resource is the Kookaberry microcomputer platform which allows students to explore the digital world around them in the context of cross-curricula lesson plans encompassing the humanities and performing arts as well as STEM subjects.

The Foundation is currently raising funds to conduct Australia-wide trials; and ultimately to provide a Kookaberry free to every Year 5 student in Australia in 2019.

The Kookaberry is pre-programmed to perform applications using a variety of sensors and control peripherals selected from a menu on an on-board screen. No coding experience is required, and applications can be set up in minutes. It can store measurements over time for display and graphical analysis, and is independent of both the internet and WiFi..

When used for teaching Digital Technology, it is compatible with both the Arduino and the micro:bit, and includes an on-board MicroPython compiler; a simple drag-and-drop interface for both reading and writing python files; a compass; accelerometer; Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) radio; and a simple but powerful editing tool on an attached PC.

Building a Culture of Innovation – Carroll Hatfield

Ss Peter and Paul Kiama has been on a journey of integrating innovation since the National Innovation and Science Agenda report was issued in December 2015. We began by developing an innovation space and building up a variety of resources to support the teaching and learning of innovation. From here our focus then became about building a culture of innovation throughout the school. An innovation committee was formed and together we implemented a variety of strategies to build our culture of innovation with both teachers and students. Innovation is now integrated into what we do at Ss Peter and Paul and we will share our ideas including:

  • What innovation means to us
  • How we support teachers in their capacity to integrate innovation
  • The practical considerations of space and mobility of resources to ensure integration into classroom teaching and learning
  • Innovation challenges at lunch to build student capacity and peer support
  • Strategies that work to engage girls
  • Recess demonstrations for staff
  • Parent engagement
  • Innovation using VEX and other robotics.
